Friday, April 12th, 2019

A team of four actuarial science students from Drake University’s College of Business and Public Administration placed second in the Humana Actuarial Case Competition March 27–29 in Louisville, Ky.

In its first year, the competition aims to bring together top actuarial students from around the country to tackle a real-world problem facing the insurance industry. Drake’s team consisting of seniors Abigail Benz, Zoey Glenn, Craig Nielsen, and Rachel Youngquist was one of 38 schools to compete in the event.

The competition involved two rounds. The first round was virtual in which the team had three days to respond to a case question. Five teams, including Drake, were then selected to advance to the final round held at Humana’s headquarters in Louisville, Ky. The Drake team had 24 hours to complete data analysis, research, and develop a comprehensive strategy for fighting the growing opioid crisis. The team presented their findings and recommended strategy to a panel of senior leaders at Humana who served as judges for the competition. The Drake students were awarded a $4,000 prize for winning second place.
