The Office of Community Engaged Learning offers multiple paid employment opportunities for students throughout the year.
Community Work Study Positions
A limited number of Federal Work Study positions take place off campus at nonprofits in the community. If you are eligible for Federal Work Study (per your Financial Aid package), you are eligible to apply for one of these positions. Positions are posted on Handshake. This is a great way to gain skills while learning about the Des Moines community! Some of the community host site agencies for the 2018-2019 academic year include ISU Extension & Outreach Polk County, West Des Moines Community School District, Science Center of Iowa, Children & Family Urban Movement, and Grace United Methodist Church.
Service Learning Ambassadors
Service-Learning Ambassadors (SLAs) are students committed to working with service-learning and community engagement. Each SLA focuses on a specific project, such as food recovery, Alternative Breaks, the Sprout Garden, etc. SLAs commit to working 6-8 hours a week on their project, working to plan and organize the event/project, recruit Drake students, and perform follow-up.
Positions are for the entire academic year and applications typically come out in February for the next academic year. Positions for the 2018-2019 academic year are full.
