Hazardous Materials Shipping

A hazardous material has the potential to cause harm to humans, animals or the environment. It can be an agent or item generated from various activities such as teaching or research laboratories. At times, there is a need to ship these hazardous materials elsewhere. If improperly shipped or transported, these materials can pose serious threats to the health of humans and the environment.

The shipping of hazardous materials is regulated by the Department of Transportation (DOT) and/or international agencies such as International Air Transport Agency (IATA). To ensure that proper regulations are met, these hazardous materials must be properly packaged and handled by trained employees. Failure to meet regulatory requirements might result to citations, fines, and/or imprisonment.

As such, the Environmental Health and Safety Department has provided guidelines and training for all employees handling and shipping hazardous materials to ensure proper regulatory requirements are being met.
