Study agricultural law in Havana, Cuba!

In 2012, a group of Drake Law School students became the first U.S. legal group to visit Cuba to study agricultural law.

Since then, Neil Hamilton, director of the Agricultural Law Center, has been leading Drake Law students to the country as part of a course on international agricultural development and the law.

Current travel restrictions prevent us from planning an immediate trip, however we will continue to monitor this with the goal of resuming this opportunity in the future. We are also pursuing additional international agricultural law and policy opportunities for students to participate in as part of the Drake Law experience.

Program Overview

Prior to the trip, students study the history of U.S. Cuban relations and examine current economic reforms in Cuba. During the visit, students meet with Cuban agriculture and legal officials, attend lectures about the Cuban legal and agricultural systems, and visit several farms and urban gardens.

Following the trip, the students work on developing projects to further expand the relation between Drake Law School and the Cuban legal and agricultural communities.

Trip highlights include:

• Experiencing the historical and cultural sites of Havana
• Meeting with Cuban legal scholars and government officials in session covering the Cuban Constitution, legal education in Cuba, history of agrarian reforms, and current issues in agricultural law
• Visiting farms and urban gardens in the Havana area
• Participating in a joint session on agricultural law with the Cuban Agricultural Law Society
