Elizabeth Olivera

Entrepreneurial Management major with a concentration in Business Law

Algonquin, Ill.

Why did you decide to come to Drake?
I always knew I wanted to be a lawyer, but I also have a passion for developing business-savvy skills that would help me start my own law firm someday. I wanted to come to Drake because I could combine my two interests. I started out in Drake’s 3+3 program, which allows students to segue three years of business school with law school and get their degrees in six years versus seven.

How have you grown in your time at Drake?
Being at Drake has made me a more independent person. In addition to the basics, like doing my own laundry, I’ve also grown a lot through my classes. Being in the business school and taking a wide array of AOIs (Areas of Inquiry) courses has made me more self-aware and better prepared for future jobs.

What’s it like living in Des Moines?
People think Iowa and Des Moines are just one big cornfield, but there’s a lot more to the city than that. Des Moines is comfortable and homey, but big enough to give me all kinds of opportunities. I’ve job shadowed and spent time at these amazing law firms right in the heart of downtown. Des Moines is a fun place to be, and it also makes me feel like my future is going somewhere.

So, what does the future hold for you?
Next year, I’ll be moving on to law school (hopefully at Drake)! It’ll be sad to leave behind my undergrad experience, but I know the skills and experiences I picked up at Drake will serve me well. I’m freaking out a little, but I’m really excited, too.
