I don’t consider myself to be a 4.0, super-involved student, but I’ve been able to pursue all my interests through Drake—from music to politics to volunteerism.

Des Moines is a gold mine of organizations where I can contribute and learn. And people here are always willing to help me on my journey, especially when they hear I’m a Drake student. The University’s excellent reputation and connection to the community helped me gain two internships this summer—one at Character Counts of Iowa and another at Des Moines Radio Group. 

Character Counts taps into my passion for social change and community service. I interact with the kids the organization helps while also gaining hands-on experience planning events, aiding social media efforts, and providing design work. My Des Moines Radio Group internship—which I landed after becoming acquainted with the company at a career fair on campus—allows me to interact with people and put my promotional and marketing talents to use.

I use the skills I’ve gained from courses in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication in these roles every day, and my business background gives me a better understanding of these organizations’ overall operations. Drake’s emphasis on practical application of classroom teachings is invaluable to me and to my future.
