Renald Daemicke

Secondary Education Major
Downers Grove, Ill.

You might assume that a first-year college student won’t have any opportunities to take on leadership roles. Well—at least at Drake—you’d be wrong, and I’m the proof. I sit on both my residence hall executive council and the member development committee of my fraternity. I also took part in a leadership seminar (Emerging Leaders Model), and am teaching students in the community.

These leadership experiences will help me in my future career in secondary education. I decided to pursue my education major so that I could inspire and mentor others, as my professors and adviser have already done for me. I had the opportunity to do that in my first semester: As part of one of my courses, I volunteered in a special education classroom at a local school. I had never worked with students in that area, and it was such a rewarding experience.

I’ve also been able to lead in my fraternity. To be honest, I never thought I would join a fraternity, but Greek life here is so much more than the stereotype. You definitely have that brotherly bond, which I’ve never experienced before. Those close connections led me to join the member development committee—we focus on hosting events and helping our brothers reach their full potential.
