H. Ellie Falter is Assistant Professor of Music Education at Drake University where she teaches undergraduate music education courses and supervises student teachers. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Colorado Boulder, and a B.Mus. and M.Mus. in music education from Syracuse University. Having also taught band, orchestra, and choir in K-12 schools, she specializes in early childhood and elementary general music.
Dr. Falter examines the intersections between music education and general early childhood education, seeking to share and adapt best practices across these disciplines as may be most enriching for students and teachers. Her publications can be found in journals with a music or arts education emphasis—Visions of Research in Music Education, Arts Education Policy Review, Perspectives: Journal of the Early Childhood Music & Movement Association, General Music Today, Teaching Music, Iowa Music Educator, School Music News, and The Colorado Music Educator—and those with a generalist, early childhood emphasis—Teaching Young Children, Early Years Bulletin.
She has also presented at state, national, and international conferences for the European Early Childhood Educational Research Association (EECERA), the National Association for Music Education (NAfME), the American Education Research Association (AERA), the Early Childhood Music & Movement Association (ECMMA), the Society for Music Teacher Education (SMTE), Mountain Lake Colloquium (for teachers of general music methods), the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), and for state early childhood or music educators associations in California, Colorado, Iowa and Wyoming.
Dr. Falter currently serves as Special Learners Chair for the Iowa Music Educators Association, Secretary on the board for the Early Childhood Music & Movement Association, and as an Advisory Board Member for the Music Educator’s Journal.
