For students entering prior to Fall 2017:
Students will complete at least 8 hours in a sterile compounding environment. The Sterile Training experience is designed to introduce the student to required technical expertise and professional decision making related to sterile compounding.
Patient Care Elective
The Patient Care Elective consists of 40-42 hours in a variety of pharmacy practices. Potential opportunities include community pharmacy wellness, hospital practice, discharge counseling, medication reconciliation, and many other services.
Health Disparities Service Learning
Students will spend 40-42 hours in practice environments dedicated to serving patient populations who are at risk for health disparities. Students will develop skills in communications, professionalism, empathy, and cultural competency.
For students entering Fall 2017 or later:
Hospital/Institutional Practice I
Students experience 40 hours in a hospital pharmacy practice setting. Students will develop skills required for the safe and accurate preparation and distribution of medications in the hospital setting. Students will also learn skills needed to safely and accurately prepare medications using sterile technique.
Healthcare Disparities Service-Learning
Students complete 40 hours in practice environments dedicated to serving patient populations who are at risk for health disparities. Students will develop skills in communications, professionalism, empathy, and cultural competency.
Community Outreach I
Students participate in at least 4 community outreach events. Examples include community health fairs, immunization clinics, and other health-related outreach activities. Students will develop planning, communication, and clinical skills while providing these services.
