The entire final year of the professional program is spent participating in eight 5-week APPEs. Of the eight experiences assigned, four are required: hospital practice, community practice, ambulatory care and acute care. The remaining four blocks are elective and may be selected from other specialty care or non-patient care experiences. One of these electives may be completed at an additional ambulatory care site.
The Community Practice APPE is completed in a setting where medications are provided to ambulatory patients. APPE goals are the development and demonstration of skills applicable to the community practice setting including but not limited to:

The Ambulatory Care APPE occurs in a variety of practice settings including but not limited to community pharmacies, hospital outpatient pharmacies, medication therapy management companies, medical clinics, and physician offices. The Acute Care APPE occurs in an inpatient setting where the patient populations and diseases encountered are diverse and cover general medicine patient care issues. APPE goals are the development and demonstration of skills applicable to the acute care setting including but not limited to:
Non-Patient Care APPEs give students the opportunity to learn and apply various skills in areas including but not limited to pharmacy management, association management, law, research, academia, and entrepreneurial leadership. To ensure sufficient opportunity for demonstration of patient care competencies, students are limited to one non-patient care APPE.
Specialty Care APPEs give the student an opportunity to learn and apply patient-centered care principles in practice settings focusing on specific patient populations or disease conditions. Examples of Specialty Care APPEs include but are not limited to pediatrics, oncology, infectious disease, compounding, anticoagulation, geriatrics, critical care, psychiatric medicine, and diabetes care.
