SJMC Launches Dean Team Scholars Program

The Drake School of Journalism and Mass Communication (SJMC) launched the SJMC Dean Team Scholars program to support a group of high-potential communication and journalism students who are first-generation college students, from an underserved population or have demonstrated financial need. The Scholars are immersed in the media profession through networking with media professionals, leadership development opportunities, tours of media companies and meetings with the SJMC dean during their first year at Drake. Students also receive a $500 award for books and incidental expenses.

This Fall, the SJMC Dean Team Scholars have toured KCCI-TV, Dotdash Meredith and Trilix, a full-service marketing agency in downtown Des Moines. Students have also enjoyed monthly Zoom meetings with Drake SJMC alums who work in technology, investigative journalism and sports communication. The program was sponsored by generous donors who are committed to supporting future journalists and communicators.
