Counseling Education Student Presents at Conference

Counseling Education student, Renu Suddapalli, recently presented her academic work at a conference. Suddapalli presented at the Race Challenge Conference held in October at Boston College. The theme of the 2019 conference was, “Race, Culture, & White Heterosexual Male Privilege (WHMP): Survival, Resistance, and Healing in the Current Social Climate.” The conference is sponsored by the Institute for the Study and Promotion of Race and Culture. The conference is currently in its 18th year and focalizes around a specific racial or cultural issue. The conference provides pragmatic, scholarly, or grassroots analysis of the issue.
Suddapalli presented “The Exploitation of Disenfranchised Communities: Paving the Way for Nationalism.” Her presentation was part of the Freedom and Social Liberation category of the conference. Faculty advisor, Dr. Bengu Erguner-Tekinalp stated, “it is a very selective conference with participation across the nation by well-known scholars in the field. The fact that Suddapalli’s proposal was selected, and she presented among top scholars, says a lot about her work.”
The Institute for the Study and Promotion of Race and Culture at Boston College was founded in 2000 under the direction of Dr. Janet E. Helms. Its goal is to promote selective assets within education, while simultaneously addressing the social conflicts often associated with race and culture in theory and research, mental health practice, education, business, and society at large.
