Peer Mentor/Academic Consultants (PMACs)

The mission of the PMAC program is to supplement and enrich a successful transition to college while emphasizing the development of academic, social, and professional skills to be used during a student’s Drake experience and beyond. The PMAC Program consists of: Spring small group development, Spring semester large development, Summer communication, Fall development, Welcome Weekend, and mentoring throughout the Fall semester.

PMACs aim to assist new first-year students in feeling welcome, comfortable and connected at Drake. They do this by initiating communication with incoming first-year students in July, facilitating peer connections during Welcome Weekend and continuing to assist students as they navigate their first semester at Drake. During the first semester, PMACs communicate with students individually or in small groups to assist with time management, efficient studying, building relationships with faculty and the development of strategies to better utilize academic and non-academic resources. PMACs work to help their students develop a sense of belonging to the Drake community. The PMAC program is strongly tied to Drake's mission to provide an exceptional learning environment that prepares students for meaningful personal lives, professional accomplishments, and responsible global citizenship. The Drake experience is distinguished by collaborative learning among students, faculty, and staff, and by the integration of the liberal arts and sciences with professional preparation.

PMAC Guidelines:

• PMACs are expected to stay in contact with every member of the FYS throughout the semester. (Set up lunches/dinners, go to the FYS class, organize completion of a Drake Challenge, etc.)
• PMACs represent Drake University through the Office of the Provost and its entirety and should not actively recruit for any organizations.
• It is expected that PMACs communicate effectively and efficiently with first-year students from the summer through at minimum the duration of their first semester.
• PMACs must agree with and support Drake University’s Mission Statement.
• PMACs must abide by all the policies of the Dean of Students office and Drake University, including but not limited to the Code of Student Conduct, City, State, and Federal Laws. PMACs' actions reflect the Office of the Provost and the PMAC program.
