Get involved with student publications

Drake Mag will be hosting a brainstorming session for the spring issue of the magazine on Tuesday, Jan. 30 at 6 p.m. in Meredith 124C. The session will involve coming up with story ideas for the print issue and for social media. The meeting is open to anyone interested in being a part of an award-winning publication. Contact Editor-in-Chief Nate Eisenmann (nate.eisenmann@drake.edu) if you can’t attend but are still interested.

Drake Political Review will host a brainstorming session 8 p.m. Feb. 5 in Meredith 104. This is also open to anyone. Contact Editor-in-Chief Madeline Crawford (madeline.crawford@drake.edu) if you have questions. 

Drake Broadcasting System’s “What the Dog Doin’?” is looking to expand its staff, particularly those interested in covering feature stories. You’ll have an opportunity to host, write, film, interview, and report. Email Executive Producer Emma Stroner (emma.stroner@drake.edu) with your questions.

Like a good goof? Enjoy funny visuals? DUiN is accepting new writers and designers. If you’re interested in writing satire or designing stories, no previous experience is required. You can find DUiN at the activities fair or stop by the first meeting on Sunday (Feb. 4) at noon in Meredith 238. Follow DUiN on Instagram @drake.duin.

Enter Upper Midwest Emmy® Awards

The Upper Midwest Emmy® Awards Student season deadline is Feb. 2. They offer Student Production Awards for videos, scholarships for students and classroom grants for educators. Deadline for all Student Award video entries and scholarship/grant applications is Feb. 2. 

STUDENT PRODUCTION AWARDS – 20+ categories for video projects. News, sports, music videos, fiction, non-fiction, commercials, PSAs as well as craft categories for video writers, editors, photographers & talent. 

SCHOLARSHIPS – $1,500 scholarships for high school students who wish to pursue media production of some sort in college. 

CLASSROOM GRANTS – We offer up to $2,000 in classroom grants for educators who need equipment for the classroom.

Alumni news

Eduardo Zamarripa, JO’12, has been promoted to director of youth sports market development at Musco Lighting in Oskaloosa, IA, an international sports lighting company. Zamarripa was previously Musco’s soccer market manager. He is a member of the SJMC National Advisory Council and a former international student from Mexico.

Emily Boyd Steele, JO’12, announced that the influencer marketing company she founded in Des Moines, Hummingbirds, has received a $1 million infusion of seed money to expand to other cities.

Megan Bannister, JO’13, was featured recently on Iowa Public Radio’s “Talk of Iowa” show to discuss her new book “Secret Iowa: A Guide to the Weird, Wonderful and Obscure.” Bannister, a member of the SJMC National Advisory Council, is a freelance travel writer and digital content creator. Previously she was social media manager at the Des Moines Art Center. 

Randy Peterson, JO’72, longtime Des Moines Register sports reporter, has received the Football Writers Association of America Lifetime Achievement Award.
