Our Commitment to Sanctuary

Drake Community

The Department of Culture and Society express our commitment of support to students, faculty and staff in the face of a mounting culture of fear taking hold of many members of our community.

As faculty who are dedicated to analyzing various forms and effects of systemic inequality and oppression, we are aware the negative effects looming threats of mass deportations have on members of our community, particularly Muslims and those protected under DACA. We recognize that many of our community are presently feeling fear, depression and frustration by the present situation we face in this country. We acknowledge the negative effects of these forms of aggression and we are concerned for your well-being. As faculty, we welcome the opportunity to listen to your concerns, provide guidance, and guide you to resources that can help you through these times.

Our interdisciplinary inquiry traditions demonstrate the significance of concepts such as agency and mobilization as tools used to address systemic inequality. Our faculty embrace social justice and endorse the values expressed in our university President’s statement on sanctuary, we assure you of our commitment to your safety and success.

In Solidarity,

Members of the Department for the Study of Culture and Society
