ESL Endorsement

Program Details

The English as a Second Language (ESL) K-12 endorsement at Drake University is available to both graduate and undergraduate students. This endorsement meets the 18-credit Iowa Board of Educational Examiner Examiners’ requirements and can be completed at your individual pace.

The ESL endorsement focuses on the principles and practice of teaching English to students who are not proficient in English or who do not speak, read or write English. This endorsements prepare individuals to function as teachers and administrators in such programs.

Program Coursework

Must complete 18 credits, as outlined below. 

Core Courses

  • EDUC 145/245: Introduction to Teaching ELLs (prerequisite for EDUC 144/244 and EDUC 149/249)
  • EDUC 144/244: ESL Methods
  • EDUC 149/249: Issues and Assessment of English Language Learning
  • EDUC 143/243: Language and Culture 

One of the following

  • EDUC 137/237: Primary Literacy Methods
  • EDUC 155/255: Language and Literacy

One of the following

  • EDUC 120/220: ESL Strategies
  • EDUC 229: Linguistics for Educators (for practicing teachers only)

Program Options

Drake University students enrolled in any of the initial teacher licensure programs can obtain the ESL endorsement as a second endorsement.

ESL endorsement courses can also be utilized for elective credits in Drake’s two master’s degree programs for practicing teachers. Students can take up to six credits prior to admission into the program.

The ESL Endorsement (K-12) is available in combination with the following degree programs.

    • Iowa teacher shortage areas are designated annually by the Iowa Department of Education. Teachers in shortage areas may be eligible for college student forgivable loans through both state and federal programs. TAG has been identified as a shortage area.
