Internships and Careers

Internships

Drake is located in Iowa’s capital – the hub of business, government and culture. Drake’s location in Des Moines offers countless opportunities for internships, professional development, and careers. Des Moines is considered one of the world’s capitals of insurance and financial services, and is home to numerous other industries and several Fortune 500 companies.

Our students have multiple opportunities for traditional and corporate internships. Examples of recent company internships in IS include: Allied Insurance, Automatic Data Processing, Blue Compass, Hy-Vee, Inc., Iowa Wild, Meredith Corporation, Pioneer Hi-Bred International, Principal Financial Group, R&R Realty Group, and Workiva.

IS students interested in pursuing an internship for credit can apply up to 3 credit hours toward their IS major with BUS 191.  Interested students should contact Professor Mary Edrington.

Careers

Following graduation, IS majors may start their careers as application developers, IT consultants, project managers, database administrators, network administrators, business/data/systems analysts, information security leaders, or IT auditors. They will likely work in jobs that require a mix of business and technical expertise. Longer-term career paths may lead to managerial positions in IS or other areas outside the technology-related area.

In addition to the staff in Drake’s Professional and Career Development CenterHandshake is available to all current students and alumni to help them advance their career and find job openings.

The job placement rate for IS majors is very high, with our graduates hitting the ground running in entry-level positions across the Midwest and nationally. Specifically, Drake IS graduates are finding themselves at a number of exciting companies, including:
