Orientation is a day and a half experience beginning with check-in on day one and ends with class registration on day two, which is around 3 p.m.
At Drake, we feel it is very important to incoming students to become acquainted with campus life. During summer Orientation, students will also register for fall semester classes and learn about the many organizations and programs that Drake has to offer.
Students: There is a $110.00 fee for attending summer orientation, which covers your housing, meals, and general program costs.
Parents/Guest/Sibling: residing on campus: There is a $85.00 fee for attending summer orientation, which covers your housing, meals, and general program costs. Please note above question about staying on campus.
Parents/Guest/Sibling residing off campus: There is a fee of $45.00, which covers meals and general program cost.
Check-in will begin at 12:30 p.m. in the Olmsted Center and will conclude at 1:30 p.m. Please note if you need to take self-assessment (math or foreign language), please arrive at 12:30 p.m.
It is highly encouraged that all students stay in the residence halls. Linens, towels, and a thin blanket are provided. The following items are recommended:
Yes! We strongly encourage parents to accompany their student at orientation. Drake provides many sessions specific for parents and guest. You will have the opportunity to meet other parents who are going through the same experience as you.
Yes, all students are required to take the Math Readiness Assessment prior to arrival at Orientation, regardless of level of math taken in high school.
Yes, we have a music theory and foreign language assessment.
World Languages and Cultures offers a computer-based, adaptive placement exam in most of the 7 languages we offer for students wishing to enroll in a language course at Drake of a language which they have previously studied. There will be an opportunity to take a placement exam for those who have previous knowledge of their language of study. The exam will be given on Day 1 and the scores will be provided to you after you conclude the exam. For those students who are beginning a language new to them, they will be able to register for the 001 level on Day 2 of summer orientation-no placement exam is needed.
All students that are planning on being a music major it is required to take the music theory self-assessment. The placement will cover the following:
1. Identify and write pitches in treble and bass clef
2. Identify and write key signatures in major and minor keys
3. Identify intervals
4. Short rhythmic identification
Parents may stay on campus in a university residence hall separate from the students for a fee per person (See program fees page). All rooms are double occupancy. A single traveling parent/guest will be housed with another single parent/guest. A pair of parents/guests (2) will be housed together in an air-conditioned residence hall room. All parent/guest housing is on a first-come, first-served basis. Early sign up is encouraged.
The time may vary slightly depending your student’s registration time, but Orientation is scheduled to end no later than 3:00 pm on the second day.
Yes, it is our goal that every student leaves orientation with a full schedule. We do have some circumstances, which are unforeseen, which may impede our goal.
There will be plenty of classes to register for, and some seats will be reserved in first-year level courses for entering students.
Students will receive an orientation brochure through the mail in early March. Included will be details about the program and information on how to have an orientation reservation. If you have not received a brochure, please contact us via email at email@example.com.
It is sad to hear that you will not be able to attend Orientation, however if it does happen, please call the Dean of Students office at 515-271-2835 to notify us.
There are a limited number of spaces available for each academic college. Sessions will fill quickly. If for any reason you need to change from one session to another your options may be limited depending on your timing.
