Academic Coaching

Tis the season for first exams! Oftentimes, students report that their first exams in a class are the most challenging. It’s not just the stress of an exam; they’re learning how each instructor is assessing their understanding. We frequently hear from students that their first exam in a class is their worst. If your student has an exam that goes poorly, there’s no need to panic! Access & Success offers many great resources.  

Today a student came in for an academic coaching session. They opened their notebook, which contained their very organized notes. They reported that they started studying before the exam, including completing a practice exam provided by their instructor. However, they didn’t do as well as they’d hoped on the graded exam. They anticipated earning a B, but were surprised that their grade was more like a D. They had already scheduled office hours and wanted to figure out additional strategies to try – notetaking, studying, etc. That’s why we’re here! We offer academic coaching at no cost to all Drake students. They left the meeting with a new plan and a follow-up appointment scheduled before the next exam.
