Catherine M. Staub

Dean & Professor

Catherine Staub joined the faculty in the Drake School of Journalism and Mass Communication in 2015. Before being named Dean in 2022 she was the Peggy Fisher and Larry Stelter Chair of Magazine Journalism, and Director of the E.T. Meredith Center for Magazine Studies.

Her professional credentials include work as an associate editor for Meredith Corporation, a learning and development manager and communications consultant for Wells Fargo Home Mortgage, and founder and CEO of Lexicon Content Marketing, a Des Moines communications and brand media firm.

Staub serves as a judge for the American Society of Magazine Editors ASME Ellie Awards and is past head of the AEJMC Magazine Division. Staub has four degrees from Drake University—a bachelor's degree in education and English, a master’s in journalism and mass communication, a specialist degree in education, and a doctorate in educational leadership. Staub is also a graduate of the SBA Emerging 200 Executive Program.

She is Past President of the Rotary Club of Des Moines—part of Rotary International, a nonprofit worldwide service organization. Previously she has served on the YMCA Y Camp Board of Managers, Board of Directors for the East Des Moines Chamber of Commerce, as a USA Swim Official, and on the United Way of Central Iowa Strategic Communications Cabinet. She also is a member of ASME, the American Society of Magazine Editors, and AEJMC, the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication.
