Welcome to Drake Relays week!

SJMC student scholarship and award winners recognized

For the next few weeks, we’ll recognize the SJMC students who have earned scholarships or awards this spring.

John Lytle Endowed Scholarship for News Journalism — Kristen Arias. A multimedia news major who exemplifies the values and standards that emeritus Professor John Lytle sought to impart in his students: excellent reporting and writing, a devotion to public service and the profession, a strong work ethic and the highest ethical standards. Endowed by gifts from Lytle’s alums.

Joe Patrick Green Eyeshade Award — CJ Younger. Given in honor of the late SJMC assistant dean and editing professor Joe R. Patrick. Recognizes outstanding copy editors — nitpickers in the Patrick tradition.

Woodward Award for Public Affairs Reporting — Madeleine Leigh. Established by gifts from SJMC alumni to honor the late Professor Robert D. Woodward upon his retirement. Recognizes excellence in public affairs reporting.

Erik Isgrig Advertising Scholarship — Anna George. Honors a distinguished member of the Drake advertising faculty by his former students. Recognizes an outstanding advertising student.

Frank Miller Scholarship — Courtney Jackson. Named after a Pulitzer Prize-winning editorial cartoonist for The Des Moines Register and funded by his friends and colleagues.

94.1 “Top Dog” Award — Will Baumgartner and JD Snover. Recognizes excellence in and passion for audio work. Names will be displayed on a plaque outside the SJMC dean’s office.

Tell Sell Memorial Scholarship — Grace Altenhofen. Given to an outstanding student interested in a career in news journalism.

Cyril and Lucille Clifton Scholarship — Luke Clausen, Courtney Jackson, Gabby Lucas. Named in honor of Cyril “Cy” Clifton, a former political reporter for The Des Moines Register. Recognizes students for academic achievement.

Drake Mag launch party

DBS Relays live shows

Drake Broadcasting System will produce three live shows during Drake Relays. They will be Tuesday at 7:30 p.m, Friday at 3 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m.

Work for Drake, get free summer housing

Drake Facilities Planning and Management is hiring students to work on campus during the summer. Pay is $10/hour, the schedule is flexible and on-campus housing is provided. Work includes residence hall turnover; maintenance and trades; grounds and landscaping; special projects for planning, design and construction; and administrative support. Apply online via Handshake, search “Facilities Summer Work Team.” Application includes a current resume and a supplemental document with pre-screening questions. Retirement reception for Dean Richardson

Dean Kathleen Richardson is retiring after more than 20 years as a Drake teacher and administrator. Faculty, staff and students are invited to a retirement reception to celebrate her career on Friday, May 6, 3-5 p.m. in the north lobby of Meredith Hall near the atrium.

John T. Halbert, JO’54, has written his biography. “An American Gypsy” tells about Halbert’s life as a journalist, Air Force combat pilot and information officer, and public affairs advisor to four secretaries of the Air Force.

Student workers needed for Meredith Hall packing

Students who are available throughout May to help pack up Meredith Hall and prepare for the relocation are encouraged to contact Dean Kathleen Richardson (kathleen.richardson@drake.edu) for details. Pay is $7.25/hour rising to $8/hour in mid-May.
