Advice to First-Gen Students:

We asked some of our amazing first-generation faculty, staff and students to share their best advice with you that they wished they knew when beginning their college journey. Here's what they said:

  • Be proud. You are blazing a new trail within your family and for yourself, and that’s amazing. You’ll bring fresh perspective to so many experiences and conversations during your time at Drake. We are lucky to have you here

- Dr. Dave Remund, Executive Director-University Communication and Marketing

  • Ask questions! I was under the assumption that everyone around me knew how to navigate college. The reality is everyone has questions or is unsure about something.  Use your resources, ask questions, and seek out the answers you need to be successful.

    - Dr. Jenny Tran-Johnson, Drake University Registrar

  • Use your resources. The University has so much to offer so if you need help with something – ask someone! There is probably a person or service on campus for that issue!

    - Kodee Wood, Assistant Director – Student Activities & Organizations
