Athletic Training Spotlight

Meet Sonja Squiers, a second-year (A2) student from Independence, Minnesota, who is in the Master of Athletic Training (MAT) program.

Sonja will graduate from the Master of Athletic Training (MAT) program in 2024. As part of her experiential education requirements, Sonja is completing a fall 2023 immersive experience with the University of Minnesota Football. Read more about this immersive experience below.

Why did you choose your immersive site - Gopher Football?

I chose my immersive site with Gopher Football because I wanted to gain experience working at the B1G 10 level with access to incredible mentors and because I enjoy being in high-intensity environments. Plus, it was a bonus to have the opportunity to be close to home for the semester!

What is your favorite part/experience so far?

My favorite experience so far has been traveling with the team to North Carolina for one of our away games. (That, or being on the field for our home game win against Nebraska!)

How has this experience helped you in future career planning?

I came into my immersive with an open mind as to what I plan to do after graduating, but now that I’ve spent some good time at my site I’ve learned that college football is definitely my speed and I would either love to continue working with college football or even work towards becoming an AT for the NFL.
