Designed for you: Drake's Masters of Science in Education in Science, Instructional Leadership & Teaching Practices (ILTP) is specifically designed for educators in urban school environments. This program is open exclusively to teachers and staff currently working in the Des Moines Public School system to support both your students and your work in the classroom. Customize the curriculum around your interests, experiences, and goals. Pursue a master's or specialist's degree while also adding an endorsement.
Research Oriented: The MSE in ILTP also known as BLUE engages PK-12 teachers, instructional coaches and building leaders with responsive teaching and learning strategies. The Drake-DMPS BLUE program uses current research to invigorate and reframe teaching and learning through a responsive lens. Before finishing the program, every student completes a research project that is based on the needs of the students they are currently teaching.
Practical Application: Students gain an increased understanding of the unique contexts of teaching and learning in an urban and varied school community. BLUE students can also pursue electives in content areas like ELL, Literacy, STEM, Talented and Gifted, and Special Education. Graduates of BLUE feel better prepared and equipped to meet the needs of all learners in their schools.
Reputation for Quality: A Drake degree prepares students to lead. Faculty members in this program have all taught in PK-12 classrooms and are focused on enhancing skills and knowledge to apply in the classroom.
Valuable Connections: Discuss ideas, research and teaching techniques with expert faculty members and fellow DMPS teachers.
Develop Leadership Skills: Many graduates of this program move into leadership roles heading cultural proficiency and professional development efforts. Graduates have gone on to be mentors, school leadership team members, PLC leaders, demonstration classroom teachers, and innovation teachers.
Convenient scheduling: Classes are a combination of weekends, evenings, and online.
Affordable: With discounted tuition for DMPS employees and the ability to graduate in in two years (six continuous semesters), this program is affordable.
