Chemical Safety Practices

                                                                                  Let’s go over important chemical safety practices. These practices are outlined in the Laboratory Safety Manual for future reference.

Label your containers.

• Include the full chemical name or names and concentration.
• Include the appropriate signal word; “Danger” or “Warning”.
• Include a hazard statement, such as “flammable” or “toxic”. You can find the required information on the primary container label and on the SDS.

Follow the manufacturer’s storage recommendations and segregate chemicals based on their hazard class. Store all liquid hazardous materials in compatible secondary containment. Store chemicals below 5 feet high whenever possible to reduce the risk of dropping containers.

Maintain a chemical inventory for each lab. Update your inventory annually.
