I came to Drake in 2014. Prior to that, I received my B.A. from Beloit College in 2005, my M.F.A. in Creative Writing from University of Massachusetts-Amherst in 2009, and my Ph.D. in English from University of North Texas in 2013. I'm an Iowa native, and I grew up watching the Bulldogs with my dad. I'm excited about the relationship between artists and poets, and my courses tend to explore those intersections through creative writing. I teach courses on poetry writing, poetry and the visual arts, the works of horror writer H.P. Lovecraft, and contemporary and modern literature. I'm the author of six books of poetry. My most recent is a book of poems called Magpies in the Valley of Oleanders which explores modern art through persona and personal narrative.
I'm deeply involved in the literary scene in Des Moines, and I help organize events with Wesley House and Beaverdale Books. Outside of the classroom, I spend most of my time reading, writing, watching movies, and hanging out with my wife Lydia and our entourage of animals, including our Welsh Corgi Keats."
