Oreon E. Scott was a former Drake governing board member who turned his success as a St. Louis real estate businessman into a lifetime of philanthropy for the Disciples of Christ Church, which founded Drake in 1881.
Given annually since 1949, the Oreon E. Scott Award recipient is considered to be the exemplary senior student leader at Drake. Excellence in scholarship, leadership, service, and involvement are hallmarks of the Oreon E. Scott Award winner. As part of their honor, the recipient will have the opportunity to speak at commencement in May. This award requires additional supporting information, including a letter of nomination and the nominee's current resumé. We were pleased to award Matthew Williams as the 2023 Oreon E. Scott Outstanding Senior Award on May 6th at the Adams Leadership Award ceremony. Matthew received an unprecedented nine letters of support, all indicating his contributions to our campus community:
"Matthew embodies everything that it means to be the Oreon E. Scott outstanding senior at Drake. They came to Drake with the intention to “leave our campus community better than when they arrived” and in their work serving current future Bulldogs, this student has exceeded their goal!”
Another nominee writes “this student has been an exemplary student, achieving a near-perfect (3.94) GPA during their undergraduate career at the Zimpleman College of Business. During this time, they completed three internships, and were accepted into Drake’s masters of accounting program with the support of several merit-based scholarships that reflect their outstanding academic performance.”
Finally, another letter mentions, “we have no doubt this student is a deserving candidate for the Oreon E. Scott Outstanding Senior of the Year award at Drake University. Their commitment to academic excellence, personal growth, and community service is unparalleled, and they deserve recognition for their hard work, dedication, and passion.”
As you can see, Matthew excels in all categories of scholarship, leadership, service, and involvement, not only at Drake University but also within her surrounding community. He truly represents everything that defined Oreon E. Scott.
