SJMC Policy for Faculty Use of Generative AI

The Drake School of Journalism and Mass Communication (SJMC) recognizes the potential benefits and risks associated with generative AI. To harness the positive impact of these tools while mitigating potential negative consequences, we have developed the following guidelines to govern their use by faculty.

Our school is committed to maintaining the personalized attention that defines our student experience. That personalized attention applies to all the interactions we have with students - including grading of student work.

While we will not use generative AI tools for grading, it is important we stay current with emerging technologies that shape our field. Professors may use generative AI tools to enhance course materials, offer creative examples, and explore new ways of thinking about the topics we teach.

When AI tools are used in class, we will clearly communicate the purpose and process to students. Our goal is to ensure that these tools complement the learning experience, never replace the learning outcomes of a class. Any AI-generated content will be identified as such, and students are welcome to ask questions about how these tools work and why they are being used.

We are committed to protecting student privacy and data. Any use of AI tools involving student information will adhere to Drake University's privacy standards.

Faculty should be aware of the potential biases inherent in AI models and take steps to mitigate their impact on student assessments.

This policy allows us to innovate while preserving the personal engagement that our students value. By being transparent about our use of generative AI, we aim to foster an open dialogue about the role of technology in our evolving industry.
