The Office of Sustainability works to support students, staff, and faculty in becoming more sustainable. See the resources below for steps to take towards sustainability!
There are two separate compost programs on our campus. Both of these programs divert waste from landfills.
The Event Compost Program allows faculty, staff, and students to request compost bins for their events. Any event that has food or paper products can use this program!
The Compost Event Guide Student is for Student Organizations.
The Compost Event Guide Faculty/Staff is for Faculty/Staff holding events.
The GreenRU Compostable Materials guide of what is compostable can help you understand how this could divert waste from your event. This is an industrial compost program, so the compost is processed at a facility off site.
This condensed Compost Visual Aid Industrial is a helpful visual for what is compostable with this program.
If you have any questions, email sustainability@drake.edu.
The Sprout Compost Program is a student-run program that collects food waste from our residence halls, Olmsted, Johansen Student Center, and Fraternity/Sorority Life Houses weekly. The food waste is brought to the Sprout Garden, where it is used to build a compost pile each semester. The program is in partnership with the Drake Environmental Action League. You can email deal@drake.edu or compost@drake.edu to request a personal compost bin or learn more about the program!
The compost made here is used in the Sprout Garden to help the plants get all the nutrients they need.
The Compost From Your Dorm information sheet is helpful for getting started.
The Compost at Sprout Guide clearly shows what items are compostable with this program, which is different from the Compost at Events guide, as this is not an industrial compost program.
If you have any questions, email compost@drake.edu.
The Sustainable Living Guide provides information on how to incorporate sustainability into your everyday life. From information on recycling to the DART bus (which Drake students, staff, and faculty ride for free), this guide is your go-to!
This article has a TON of suggestions for reducing your footprint! You can take one suggestion, or many, and learn how to have an impact in sustainability.
E-Waste is a huge problem in our landfills, as the chemicals from these products can damage waterways and soil if they are not disposed of properly.
The Office of Sustainability collects E-Waste to ensure that it is properly disposed of. There is a collection bin on the first floor of the Johansen Student Center in break room 117 to place your E-Waste and batteries. You can email sustainability@drake.edu with any questions.
The E-waste Recycling2025 document clarifies the location and accepted items.
The E-waste Accepted Equipment document has a longer list of the accepted items for the E-Waste Program.
