Stephen C. Gara, Ph.D., CPA

Associate Professor of Accounting

Dr. Stephen Gara is currently an Associate Professor of Accounting at Drake University. He holds a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) from Syracuse University with majors in Finance and Transportation and Distribution Management. He has law degrees from Southern Methodist University (J.D.) and Georgetown University (LL.M.). Gara worked briefly for a law firm in Washington, DC practicing tax law. He earned his Ph.D. in Accounting from the University of Memphis. Gara came to Drake University in 2005, after previously working at Long Island University and Old Dominion University. His research interests include the economic impact of tax law changes, and tax planning. Stephen has presented his work at conferences around the world, including the United Kingdom, Germany, and South Africa, as well across the country. He has published in Advances in Taxation, CPA Journal, Review of Quantitative Finance and Accounting, Education Finance and Policy, Managerial Auditing Journal, Advances in Accounting Education, among others. He is a member of the American Accounting Association (AAA), Academy of Legal Studies in Business (ALSB), Iowa Society of CPAs (ISCPA), and Financial Executives International (FEI).
