Don’t wait until you’re struggling to seek assistance. Whether you’re aiming for an A or just trying to pass a tough class, Drake University offers free tutoring services to all undergraduate students across a wide range of disciplines. Many students use our Tutoring Center to proactively stay ahead, prepare for exams, or sharpen their understanding of core concepts.

Why Use the Tutoring Center

Tutoring isn’t a last resort—it’s a smart strategy. Here’s why our Bulldogs take advantage of the Tutoring Center:

  • It’s completely free. The Tutoring Center operates at no additional cost to our undergraduate students.
  • It’s personalized. One-on-one and small-group discussions help you learn at your own pace in the best format.
  • It’s peer-led. Our tutors are fellow Drake students who have successfully taken the course(s) they’re leading in the Tutoring Center. They know what students are going through and what the professor expects.
  • It builds confidence. You’ll walk away from each session with more clarity, better strategies, and stronger academic skills.
  • It works. Students who take advantage of our Tutoring Center often see noticeable improvements in grades and retention.

How to Schedule Time with a Tutor

It’s easy to get started with the Tutoring Center. Use Starfish to view available subjects and times, select in-person or virtual sessions, choose a peer tutor who fits your needs, and schedule a session with them.

Peer Success Coaching

In addition to subject-specific tutoring, students can also meet with a Peer Success Coach. This coach is a fellow Drake student trained to help with:

  • Study habits and time management skills
  • Exam preparation
  • Semester planning and goal-setting
  • Motivation and accountability

Our Peer Success Coaches meet with you one-on-one and help you develop strategies for long-term academic success. Our Access and Success team also serves as Academic Coaches, and partners with students to develop sustainable strategies for success. Drake students can set up an appointment with a Peer Success Coach or an Academic Coach through Starfish.

The Writing Center

Working on an essay, lab report, or research paper? The Drake Writing Center is here to help at any stage of the writing process—from brainstorming to final draft. Writing tutors are highly trained undergraduate peer consultants who work under faculty supervision. Students can schedule an appointment at the Writing Center through Starfish.
