Human Resources Management Concentration

This concentration focuses on issues surrounding the management of people in organizations. It is available to undergraduate students of any major interested in human resource (HR) management who want to prepare for a career in human resources or related fields. The concentration is designed to provide students with the core competencies to be competitive in today's job market. Drake's HR concentration is an interdisciplinary program provided by the Zimpleman College of Business, the College of Arts and Sciences, and the School of Education.

FACULTY

University faculty who teach the concentration courses hold doctorate degrees and bring a blend of business-world experience, academic training, and a strong research foundation to the classroom.

CONCENTRATION OPTIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

High school students are encouraged to take courses that help them develop written and oral communication and information technology skills.

• Complete an internship in HR during either their junior or senior year.
• Take the Professional in Human Resources (PHR) accreditation exam, certifying them as competent in HR Management. Successful completion of the PHR exam requires independent study of material beyond what is included in the above courses.

INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

Internships in HR are available during the school year and summer months. These opportunities allow students to gain valuable on-the-job experiences and a competitive edge in today's job market.

The Drake Society for Human Resource Management student chapter offers activities and resources for the professional development of those students interested in pursuing careers in HR or related fields. It is sponsored by the national SHRM and Central Iowa SHRM chapters.
