Funding Opportunities

The College of Arts and Sciences offers financial support for you to pursue significant research or travel opportunities beyond the scope of your curricular activities.

Student Travel and Research (STAR) Fund

Applications for STAR Funds are accepted on a rolling basis, and should generally be submitted at least one month prior to the first date of travel. These funds are reserved for special and significant opportunities that are not part of the regular ongoing academic programming at Drake.

Friends of Drake Arts Student Travel Fund

Fine Arts students majoring in art, music, or theatre are eligible to apply for Friends of Drake Arts STAR funds to support special and significant opportunities that are not part of the regular on-going academic programming at Drake.

Jon N. Torgerson Scholarship Fund

The Jon N. Torgerson Scholarship Fund is designed to assist a Humanities major with demonstrated need to participate in a Drake-sponsored international travel seminar. To be eligible, the applicant must be majoring in an area of the Humanities, have at least a 2.0 GPA, and plan to enroll in a Drake-sponsored international study seminar.

A&S Dean's Emergency Funds

The A&S Dean’s Emergency Fund was created with the generous support of the National Alumni Council to help students with financial assistance in a serious time of need.  This fund is intended to be a supplemental financial resource when students are unable to meet immediate and essential expenses directly related to their education.  Examples of qualifying needs include, but are not limited to textbooks, supplies, instruments, or equipment required for your Drake courses.

The Iowa Space Grant Consortium

The Iowa Space Grant Consortium provides research and experiential opportunities for undergraduate students in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) disciplines. 

Sheslow Grant for Music Competition

These funds are reserved for special and significant opportunities that are not part of the regular on-going academic programming at Drake. These opportunities are for music students and ensembles attending and/or performing at music festivals, conferences, competitions, study or tours.  

A&S International Travel Fund

This travel stipend supports science students within the College of Arts & Sciences who are participating in international research/internships or study abroad. Award recipients will be selected by a committee of science department chairs.

Award Amount: Maximum of $3000 per student, 2-4 students awarded each year

Deadline: February 1st

To be submitted to ask.as@drake.edu:

  1. Project description (nature of the proposed travel for research/internship/study abroad)
  2. Explanation of how the activity is related to learning goals in your major program at Drake University
  3. Recommendation from a faculty member (who is not the department chair)
  4. Travel budget (how award money will be spent)
  5. Other sources of funding

Lon Larson Research Scholarship

The Larson Scholars are designated for student undergraduate research in the sciences. The funds are intended to:

  1. Enhance and deliver meaningful off-campus research opportunities for students interested in the clinical neuro-medicine and neuroscience (with partners such as Boston University)
  2. Increase student involvement and success with DUSCI, which is Drake’s unique summer research experience for undergraduates
  3. Improve access to STEM training with Drake’s diverse partners such as ACCI, Mercy Hospital and Blank Children’s Hospital
  4. Improve access to international research and curricular experience in health care and medicine

Award Amount: Maximum of $5000

Deadline: February 1

  1. Project description:  Who will be engaged in the research? What is the nature of the proposed research as it pertains to the above goals for the fund?
  2. Explanation of how the activity is related to learning goals in your major program at Drake University
  3. Recommendation from a faculty member who is supervising the research
