National Volunteer Week

National Volunteer Week 2019 was April 7-13!

National Volunteer Week is an opportunity to celebrate the impact of volunteer service and the power of volunteers to come together to tackle tough challenges and build stronger, more resilient communities. Each year during this week, a focus is put on the people and causes that inspire us to serve, recognizing and thanking volunteers who lend their time, talent and voice to make a difference in their communities.

April 7-13 - IMPACT Community Action personal hygiene drive.  The personal hygiene pantry at IMPACT is based solely off donations and has been empty for the last few weeks. Donations of any hygiene items such as soaps, razors, toothbrushes, toothpaste, house cleaning items, and any other cleaning items would be gladly accepted. There will be bins in every dorm hall during the week of April 7th through the 13th for people to drop off items at any time. Tuesday, April 9 -Exercise Your Character 2019
.  8am-12pm at Hy-Vee Hall in downtown Des Moines. In partnership with Hy-Vee, The Robert D. and Billie Ray Center at Drake University is seeking volunteers for this event held for more than 10,000 fourth and fifth graders to promote good character. All volunteers receive a free T-shirt and lunch. To volunteer, email Hilary at and include your T-shirt size. Family and friends ages 18 and up are welcome to register with Drake faculty and staff. 

Tuesday, April 9
 - The Monroe Elementary after-school 4-H programs are looking for volunteers to assist them in a service project on Monroe grounds on April 9th from 2:45-5: 00 pm. Volunteers will work alongside 4-H students to beautify Monroe grounds as well as assist in starting the Monroe community garden for the spring season. Friday, April 12 - Findley Elementary School 1st grade visit to Drake. 
Form a welcome tunnel at 9:40 am from the Olmsted Parking Lot to the doors of Olmsted! Wear your Drake Blue and welcome and cheer on the first-graders from Findley. Drake has adopted the first-grade class and are excited to help the students see a college campus and learn from an early age that higher education is possible for them. Contact for more information. Friday, April 12
 - Junior Achievement of Central Iowa will be having a volunteer event from 12pm-4pm. Volunteers would be helping paint the inside of the building and possibly help landscape on the outside. To sign up or learn more, contact Engaged Citizen Corps member Sam Wolstenholm at Funding for the project provided in part by Iowa Campus Compact. 

* Saturday, April 13 - Global Youth Service Day Project "Spring Into Seeds," 10:30am-noon 
in the Sprout Garden, on the corner of 25th and Forest. The Office of Community Engaged Learning in partnership with Sodexo, Next Course Food Recovery, and the Drake Environmental Action League will engage local youth and the Drake community in an opportunity to learn about nutrition, the environment, and the responsibilities of taking care of a plant. Participants will decorate a pot and plant a vegetable seed to take home while enjoying healthy snacks and doing garden work to prepare the Sprout Garden for the spring season. Contact for more information. Drake students should register in advance to be eligible for a free T-shirt. Grant provided by Sodexo Stop Hunger Foundation and Youth Service America. 

Saturday, April 13 - Springtime Egg Hunt, sponsored by Alpha Phi Omega and Drake Association for Childhood Advocacy, 10am-noon
. All community youth are welcome! Location: Helmick Commons. Volunteers are needed the Friday before to help prepare the prize bags. Contact Carissa Popp at for more information. 

Saturday, April 13 - Habitat for Humanity Panel Build. 
Volunteers are needed for various shifts from 7:30am-5: 15 pm. Help set up or clean up, build walls, and more. Volunteers must sign up here. Spots are limited. The build will take place in the parking lot east of the Knapp Center.

* April 23 (updated date due to forecasted rain) - Paul Morrison Drake Neighborhood Spruce-Up Event, 5:30-6: 30 pm. 
Drake students and Neighborhood residents will join together for a spruce-up event. Help pick up trash on campus, surrounding streets in the Neighborhood, and Greek Street and prepare the area for the Drake Road Races. Meet at the Walgreens Parking Lot on 31st and University. Trash and recycling bags will be available. Join in the Walgreens parking lot after the clean-up for pizza! Volunteers who register in advance will receive a #DrakeServes T-shirt while supplies last. 

Dog(town) Days - celebrate local businesses in the Drake Neighborhood all month! 
This April, Drake CAB invites Drake students to participate in the inaugural Dog(town) Days! Visit 5 or more Drake Neighborhood restaurants, coffee shops, ice cream stores, etc. to celebrate the small businesses' contributions to Drake's community. Every time a student visits a participating business, he or she should request a punch in his or her punchcard, which can be picked up in the Student Life Center. On April 30th, all students who got 5 punches or more are invited to a celebration with free local food & fun conversation at the corner of University and 25th Street!
