The Master of Science in Counseling program has core courses that students of every specialty take. Then each specialty takes specific courses about their specific field.
You will then select one or more of the specializations to complete, depending on your educational and career goals.
The three specializations are:
Clinical Mental Health and Rehabilitation specialization students take a total of 33 credits worth of core courses. School Counseling specialization students take 15 credits worth of core courses.

The Clinical Mental Health Specialization will give you the expertise needed to work in a variety of settings, including agencies, group practices, substance abuse treatment centers, hospitals, residential treatment centers, and employee assistance programs.

The Rehabilitation Counseling Specialization will prepare you to work in state organizations, Veterans Administration, hospitals, rehabilitation agencies, and private practice, as well as in insurance rehabilitation, for advocacy groups, or as a consultant.

If you are interested in working in the school setting, the School Counseling Specialization prepares you to work with elementary students, secondary students, or both levels. Additional coursework is provided if you are not a licensed teacher.
School Counseling specialization students take Counseling Children so they learn specific skills and techniques to work with children and adolescents in a trauma informed manner.
The Drake Counseling program partners with the Positive Discipline Association, an internationally recognized parent training organization, to offers students parent educator certification and/or a specific classroom management certification and to add to their curriculum and build their expertise. This opportunity, unique to our program, allows students to be certified in parent education as well.
Students can also add Mental Health or Rehabilitation specialization courses into their curriculum that will count as electives for this specialization.
