Four Drake Pharmacy Students Present Posters at ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting

Monday, February 10th, 2025

In December of 2024, several pharmacy students and faculty members of Drake University’s College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences (CPHS) traveled to the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) Midyear Clinical Meeting & Exhibition in New Orleans, La. At this conference, four students had the honor of presenting a research poster.

The ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting is one of the largest events for those in the pharmacy profession, with over 20,000 attendees every year from across the globe and nearly 2,000 student posters. The student attendees said that having the opportunity to experience this event greatly impacted their professional development and preparedness for their careers in pharmacy.

Students were able to explore the residency program showcase, where they had the opportunity to speak with residents and preceptors from accredited residency programs around the country. Some students participated in the Personnel Placement Service, where they had the chance to interview for industry and fellowship positions. They could also attend learning sessions, see other student, resident, and pharmacist posters, and network.

Congratulations to the following Drake students and mentors on presenting a poster at the 2024 ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting & Exhibition:

  • Amisha Tayal, PharmD/MBA Candidate 2025, presented research conducted alongside Dr. Wendy Mobley-Bukstein, Associate Professor of Pharmacy Practice, titled Diabetes Distress Scale: A Pilot Study on Standard of Care Implementation.
  • Anna Braun, PharmD Candidate 2025, presented research conducted alongside Dr. Abebe Mengesha, Professor of Pharmaceutics, and Dr. Pramod Mahajan, Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences, titled Doxorubicin Treatment Enhances B-Raf Degradation in Human Cancer Cells.
  • Deena Alsabbah, PharmD Candidate 2025, presented research conducted with Dr. Wendy Mobley-Bukstein, Associate Professor of Pharmacy Practice, titled Assessing Health Literacy in Patients with Diabetes.
  • McKenna Murcek, PharmD Candidate 2025, presented research conducted with Dr. Grant Stimes, Baylor College of Medicine, titled Evaluation of Vancomycin Dosing in Larger Adolescents and Adults.

“Doing research and going through the process of creating something from the ground up are experiences residents have the opportunity to do,” said Deena Alsabbah, a fourth-year PharmD candidate interested in pursuing a residency after graduation. “Presenting your hard work and just being at Midyear itself is definitely a one-of-a-kind experience. You’re surrounded by so many people who are just as passionate about pharmacy and healthcare overall. Seeing all of the other kinds of work being done is so inspiring.”

In addition to Drake’s poster presenters, Dr. Sarah Grady, Professor of Pharmacy Practice, co-presented a PowerPoint presentation with Dr. Kathleen Vest, Midwestern University, titled Updates in the Treatment of Depression in Women Through All Stages of Life.

CPHS also joined the Iowa Pharmacy Association (IPA) and the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy in hosting the Iowa Reception. Pharmacy students and professionals from across the state of Iowa, as well as friends of Iowa pharmacy, had the chance to interact and socialize at this networking event, as well as hear from IPA CEO Kate Gainer, Drake CPHS Dean Erik Maki, and University of Iowa Dean Jill Kolesar.

Drake University prides itself on its representation at this event and many other professional conferences like it. Sending students and faculty to share knowledge with, as well as learn from, others in their professions is highly valuable for the growth of CPHS and the future of healthcare. We would like to commend all who attended and look forward to what next year’s Midyear Meeting has in store.
