Learning Outcomes
The following is the A.B.A. Standard 301 Statement Regarding Learning Outcomes for the Artificial Intelligence Law Certificate.
Knowledge and understanding of substantive law
- Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of aspects of the intersection between AI and law that are relevant to their legal careers
- Demonstrate knowledge and understanding regarding the different roles that laws, regulations, self-regulation, and contracts may play in addressing the challenges and opportunities of AI
Legal analysis and reasoning
Given a set of facts about a particular client’s AI opportunities or challenges, students will be able to:
- Identify potential legal issues raised by the client and facts
- Prepare a prioritized initial legal analysis that is clearly informed by the client’s goals
- Draft key follow-up ideas for further research and for questions to be confirmed by the client
- Develop coherent legal arguments, supported by appropriate and credible legal and non-legal sources, to explain and support the student’s choices and articulate whey they are reasonable
Legal research
- Conduct preliminary legal, and relevant non-legal, initial research online, and be aware of the strengths and weaknesses of AI tools (and any online sources) in doing so
Problem solving
Given a set of facts about a particular client’s AI opportunities or challenges, students will be able to:
- Identify key legal and non-legal issues raised by the client and facts
- Prioritize any initial analysis
- Work collaboratively, both with other legal professionals as well as with non-legal clients
Written communication in the legal context
- Effectively create a written work that engages in thoughtful and pragmatic analysis of an AI issue for a client
- Draft written legal materials for clients, including emails, draft meeting agendas, draft presentations, and draft policies or procedures
Oral communication in the legal context
- Communicate with clients seeking to guidance on AI opportunities and challenges
- Deliver short, impactful, and substantively and factually accurate presentations that include key questions for clarification
Exercise proper professional and ethical responsibilities
- Understand and show commitment to accuracy and critical analysis of all sources, including but not limited to sources that may be generated by AI
- Make legal and factual assertions, or predictions about a legal outcome, only when the student can back them up with credible sources and analysis
- Demonstrate respect for other students, faculty, staff and clients and prospective clients, as well as adversaries
- Demonstrate an attitude of cooperation with other students, faculty, clients, attorneys, and judges
- Demonstrate honesty, reliability, responsibility, judgment, and critical self-reflection
