Drake Recreation Fun!

October has been a very exciting month in the Rec Center! We have hosted many fun events for students including a hip-hop dance night, a board game night, and a Wellness Conference! The Wellness Conference, WELLCON23, was an event to bring more awareness to students about the availability of resources available to them through Drake. Students were able to talk with representatives for each organization, earn credits toward Blueprint for Success, and were entered in a drawing to win prizes such as an iPad and Loop earplugs. We had a great turnout with over 150 students, faculty and staff attending!

We also added two new weekly Group X classes this month that have been a great success so far! Bulldog Pump is a lifting class for beginners to learn some basic exercises, and Bulldog Crew is an intro to rowing class that will give you a total body workout! To keep this high rolling, we ended the month with a Taylor Swift themed week of Group X classes in honor of the release of 1989 (Taylor’s Version).

Other weekly Group X classes:

  • Barre Fusion- A fun mix of yoga, dancing and pilates!
  • Cycle and Stretch- Guided cycling followed by deep stretching.
  • Karate- Martial arts instruction on basic strikes, kicks and techniques.
  • Muscle Mix- Strength training that can boost your metabolism!
  • Pilates- A mat based toning class to improve core strength and stability.
  • Yoga- Unite your breath with your body and learn poses accessible to all levels.
  • Yoga flow- Relax with a flow of soothing music and yoga to unwind.
  • Power Yoga- Fast-paced yoga focused on building strength and flexibility.
  • Spin- A mix of rolling hills, intervals, sprints and climbs all set to your fitness level.

Special events to look out for:

  • Lifting 101- November 2nd
  • Line Dance Party- November 10th
  • Thanksgiving Challenge- November 13th-17th

Intramurals have been in full swing this month, and champions have been crowned in many sports so far! We just wrapped up our outdoor soccer season, and our competitive teams had the opportunity to show off their skills on the Drake Stadium field.

Other activities, such as volleyball, were a hit as well, and teams competed for a chance to take home this season's intramural champion shirts. We also recently hosted a super fun 3v3 basketball tournament where teams duked it out in some pool play action, all leading up to the big tournament on October 20th.

The second session of intramural sports including Flag Football, Basketball and Water Polo also kicked off recently! We’re beginning another busy month of programming, with activities such as water polo in the Bell Center Pool, Basketball in the Bell Center Gym, and Flag Football in the Field House. Don’t forget, the Three Point Shootout is coming up, and the last chance to sign up is on November 9th. So, make sure your student hops on the Drake Rec App and register today!
