Drake Law Alumni Travel CLE to Harlaxton Manor

Grantham, England
August 5-12, 2024

Participants will spend six full days in England learning English law with a comparative approach. Four days will be spent at historic Harlaxton Manor, near Grantham, England, with morning classroom sessions and afternoon excursions or free time. The final day and a half will be spent in London, with a visit to an Inn of Court and Old Bailey. As a final experience, participants will attend a play in London's West End. All lectures will be presented by a Drake Law School professor and an Iowa State Judge, supplemented by local English solicitors, barristers, and other government officials. Participants will earn twelve hours of Iowa CLE credit. (CLE credit for other states may be available upon request.)

Program Faculty

Judge Brendan Greiner was appointed to the Iowa District Associate Court bench in 2018. After graduating from Drake Law School he served 11 years as an assistant county attorney in both Polk and Story counties, where he specialized in vehicular homicides and white-collar offenses. As a prosecutor he was elected associate director of the Iowa County Attorney’s Association and served as a commissioner for the Iowa Supreme Court Grievance Commission. Judge Greiner is an adjunct professor at Des Moines Area Community College where he teaches constitutional law and ethics in the criminal justice program. He is a member of the Polk County Bar Association, the Iowa Supreme Court Board of Shorthand Reporters, and is the treasurer of the C. Edwin Moore Inn of Court. He is also a licensed solicitor in England and Wales and a certified mediator.    

 

Professor Jeremy Kidd has taught corporate and contract law for more than a decade. Graduating from George Mason University School of Law in 2007 and receiving his Ph.D. in economics from Utah State University in 2009, Professor Kidd has focused his research on economic analysis of regulatory structures. Prior to entering academia, Professor Kidd practiced with the firm of Ballard Spahr in their DC office, along with clerking for Hon. Ted Stewart, U.S. District Judge and Hon. Alice Batchelder, U.S. Circuit Judge.

 

Travel and Lodging

TRAVEL

Flight arrangements are to be made by the participants and are not included in the program cost. Flights need to arrive the Heathrow Airport by 10:00 a.m on August 5, 2024. Transportation will be provided from the airport to Harlaxton.

LODGING

Guest rooms at Harlaxton are located in the manor and the adjacent (one-minute walk) Carriage House. There are three residential floors in the manor and two in the Carriage House, and there are several shared bathroom and shower facilities on each floor.

Rooms vary in shape and space and can best be described as "dormitory-style." Most of the guest rooms include two single beds and a few contain one queen sized bed, suitable for 2 adult guests. Most rooms do not include ensuite bathrooms and require the use of facilities just down the corridor. You will be asked to indicate your accommodation preferences on the registration form.

Program Costs

A $5,000 program fee covers all CLE sessions, cultural excursions and activities, the over night trip to London, dormitory style housing, dining in the campus refectory, on-site transportation, and more. A reduced rate of $3,500 will be charged to your spouse or guest who is not participating in CLE programming.

Final payment for the program is due May 17, 2024.

*Air travel is NOT included.

To secure your spot in the Harlaxton program a non-refundable deposit is required. This deposit ensures your reservation and covers administrative costs associated with processing your enrollment. Please note that this deposit is non-refundable unless the program is cancelled by Drake Law.

Participants can enroll up to May 17. Details of the deposit amount and payment instructions are provided below:

  • Full Program Payment Deadline: On or before May 17

By submitting the deposit and full program payment, you acknowledge and agree to the following terms:

  1. The deposit and program fee is non-refundable except in the event that Drake Law cancels the program.
  2. The deposit amount will be deducted from the total program fee upon completion of payment.

Information for Drake Law Students

Rising 3Ls (class of 2025) and 2024 graduates are eligible to participate in this program.

A $3,500 program fee covers one academic credit, cultural excursions and activities, the over night trip to London, dormitory style housing, dining in the campus refectory, on-site transportation, and more.

To enroll, students need to fill out the registration form.Once the registration form is received, student services will complete the enrollment. Students will be billed by Drake for summer registration on May 6. Graduating students need to complete payment by May 16.
