School of Actuarial Science & Risk Management (SoASRM) Scholarships

Roger K. Brooks Actuarial Science Scholarship

Roger Brooks is a distinguished alumnus from Drake’s actuarial program. In honor of his 60th birthday in 1997, friends of Roger Brooks, F.S.A., M.A.A.A., retired Chairman of AmerUs Life in Des Moines, donated funds to endow this scholarship. This scholarship will be awarded to an incoming freshman each academic year.

Scholarship Specifics

  • The scholarship will be approximately $3,500 per year.
  • The scholarship is renewable for the sophomore year provided the student has at least a 3.0 GPA and continues to major in actuarial science or in one of the joint programs that include actuarial science.

Scholarship Requirements

The recipient of the Roger Brooks scholarship must be:

  • An entering first-year student at Drake University with a declared major in actuarial science.
  • A student who possesses evidence of exceptional academic performance.
  • A student with demonstrated financial need.

Dr. Newt Bowers Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship was created in honor of Newt Bowers, Emeritus Professor of Actuarial Science at Drake University. Newt taught at Drake from 1969-1996 and was an author, mentor, and beloved teacher. This scholarship will be awarded to an incoming freshman each academic year.

Scholarship Specifics

  • The scholarship will be approximately $1,000 per year.
  • The scholarship is renewable for up to four years as long as the student meets the criteria set forth by the Office of Student Financial Planning for receiving financial aid, is in good academic standing with the University, maintains a declared major in actuarial science, and as long as funds are available.

Scholarship Requirements

The recipient of the Newt Bowers scholarship must be:

  • An entering first-year student at Drake University with a declared major in actuarial science.
  • A student who possesses evidence of exceptional academic performance, including but not limited to a minimum high school grade point average of at least 3.5 on a 4.0 scale, and a high school math grade point average of at least 3.75 on a 4.0 scale.
  • A student with demonstrated financial need.

Application Instructions

The deadline to apply is February 8, 2023. To apply for any of the School of Actuarial Science & Risk Management scholarships, you must:

  • Complete an application to Drake; scholarship candidates must be admitted to Drake University as an actuarial science major by Feb. 8, 2023 to be considered for this award.
  • Complete a SoASRM Scholarship Application, which includes a personal essay, by Feb. 8, 2023.
  • Submit the FAFSA or International Student Financial Information Form (ISFIF) by Feb. 1, 2023.
