Engaged Faculty Institute (December 2020 and January 2021)

The Engaged Faculty Institute is a two-week, online, asynchronous learning experience for those interested in teaching community-engaged courses. The institute works best for those who are ready to design or re-design at least one specific community-engaged course and is open to all faculty (tenured/tenure-track and instructors). Instructors from Iowa & Minnesota Campus Compact member institutions can participate at no cost. Those from non-member campuses can participate for a $250 fee. Instructors and their community partners also have the opportunity to earn a $250 stipend (for each instructor and partner) for institute participation for courses that will be taught by Spring 2022.

CEL Basics learning community 

Community Engagement Learning Community

(FALL 2020 has been postponed due to Covid-19)

The goal of the learning community is to support the planning stages of course development and implementation. We seek a cohort of 8 faculty who are interested in enhancing an existing course or creating a new course that includes a community engagement project (local, global, or online; with or without an identified community partner). Community engagement projects include a variety of modalities (service-learning, remote community engagement, public advocacy projects, community-based research, etc). We hope to include faculty from a range of disciplines. 

 Experience with community engagement is necessary to participate and preference will be given to faculty working on a course they are teaching this academic year. Instructors who have previously participated in the CEL Basics, GSL Seminar or an Iowa Campus Compact Engaged Faculty Institute are encouraged to apply!  

 The one-semester learning community commitment will begin at the end of August and includes: 

  • A $1000 stipend for the semester’s work. The first $500 provided after meeting individually with the facilitators before the semester and the remaining $500 supplied upon completion of a brief report at semester end.  
  • Working with the CEL Fellows, Sandi Patton-Imani and Sara Johnston, on the development of a community engagement assignment, activities, or a project for a current or new course.  
  • Meeting no later than the first or second week of the semester with the Fellows to discuss the assignment and project as well as issues related to instruction. 
  • Attending 60-minute meetings of all participants in the program in October and November 2020 and a final wrap up session in late November or early December.

The IACC Research Fellows Program has allowed me the chance to gain a deeper understanding of service-learning pedagogy and research.  During the Pen-to-Paper writing workshop, I was able to pitch ideas to journal editors and received personal mentorship.  It is amazing to be supported by such passionate and knowledgeable service-learning experts.
