Biography

Mezzo-soprano Dr. Alyssa Becker has been heard on stages including China, The Baltics, and across the United States.  Some of her credits include Albert Herring (Mum), Le Nozze di Figaro (Marcellina), Der Rosenkavalier (Octavian), and Falstaff (Meg).  Most recently, Dr. Becker made her Minnesota Opera debut as a chorister in their 2019-2020 season in Elektra and Edward Tulane. An active concert singer, she has been a featured soloist with The Concord Band, The Boston Conservatory at Berklee Conductor's Choir, The University of Minnesota Choirs, The University of Minnesota Orchestra, and The University of Minnesota Campus Orchestra.  She will be heard in the upcoming online release of the Edward Tulane Choral Suite beginning in December 2021.

A frequent competitor, Dr. Becker has been a winner of the Schubert Club Competition in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She is a two time state winner of the Music Teachers National Association competition and, in 2015, placed second in their regional competition. She has also been a finalist in the National Association of Teachers of Singing Competition.

An in-demand vocal teacher, Dr. Becker has previously served at the University of Minnesota, Boston Arts Academy, The Boston Conservatory at Berklee Vocal Academy, Boston Conservatory at Berklee Vocal Choral Intensive, and Amy Dancz Vocal Studio. Her students have been accepted into collegiate programs including Berklee College of Music, The University of Minnesota, and the Boston Conservatory at Berklee. Additionally, her students have been winners and finalists in the NATS Regional and National competitions.

As a vocal pedagogue, Dr. Becker is interested in cross training singers so they are prepared to sing any style of music. Her most recent research, "Control of Vibrato in Female Musical Theater Crossover Singers", was presented in 2021 conferences with The Voice Foundation and the Voice and Speech Trainers Association.

Dr. Becker holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Minnesota, a Masters of Music in Vocal Pedagogy from the Boston Conservatory at Berklee, and a Bachelors of Music in Vocal Performance from Drake University. She has studied with Leanne Freeman-Miller, Kathryn Wright, Victoria Vargas, and Adriana Zabala. She currently serves as faculty at Drake University, the Drake University Community School of Music, and maintains a private vocal studio.
