Biography

Emily Newman is an Associate Professor of Art within the Department of Art and Design. She holds a BFA in sculpture from Syracuse University, Syracuse, NY and an MFA in studio art from the University of Nebraska Lincoln.  Her artwork is made using found and recycled packaging as an observed commentary on the domestic habits of consumption.  Her intimate objects highlight the craft of the handmade and the design of the mass-produced. She is also a co-founder of the environmental art collective, Parts Per Million, which seeks direct action to fight climate change through large-scale sculpture. Emily’s recent group exhibitions include works shown at Science Center Gallery Atlanta at Emory University, Site: Brooklyn, New York and Manifest Gallery in Ohio, and two solo exhibitions at the Blanden Museum of Art in Ft. Dodge, Iowa and Farnham Galleries on the campus of Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa.  Her artwork and curatorial work has been the recipient of numerous grants from the Iowa Arts Council, National Endowment for the Arts, Friends of Drake Arts, The Center for the Humanities, and Group Creative Services.

Emily teaches a wide range of courses within the studio art program. A strong believer in interdisciplinary approaches to art making, she currently instructs students in foundational two-dimensional design, all levels of drawing, senior thesis capstone, and textiles and fibers.
