Rachel Nusbaum earned her Ph.D. from Brown University’s Department of Political Science in 2024. She also holds a B.A. from New York University’s Gallatin School of Individualized Study and an M.P.P. from American University (Washington, D.C.). She teaches both introductory and advanced courses in political theory and public policy, with an emphasis on questions of freedom, justice, and responsibility in political life. Her research is focused on responsibility and how traditional ways of understanding this concept hinder collective responses to the massive structural injustices that constitute some of today's most urgent political challenges.
Previously, Professor Nusbaum served as Postdoctoral Research Associate for the Stone Inequality Initiative at Brown University’s Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs. She also worked in Washington, D.C. for several years before moving to academia, holding positions in multiple Congressional offices as well as working for policy advocacy groups like the ACLU and HIAS, a refugee protection organization. She also has experience teaching English as a foreign language in both the Czech Republic and South Korea.
