TEACHING PHILOSOPHY
My overall teaching goals are to inspire students to maximize their potential by creating a positive working environment that provides students with the best opportunities to be successful. My philosophy is guided by several principles which include:

  • Provide mentorship by creating, enhancing and maintaining trusting relationships in an environment that is accessible, down to earth and relatable.

o I believe that relationships and trust are one of the most important aspects to designing a successful learning environment. The academic setting can be an intimidating place where admitting one’s own weaknesses is not an intuitive behavior and can be uncomfortable. However, without this open and honest communication of needs, I as the instructor can only guess where the student wants and needs improvement. By removing fear and apprehension by creating a trusting, mentoring relationship, I can work with students in those areas they need and want the most help to maximize their time with me in the learning environment.

  • Encourage students to take responsibility for their own learning.

o I believe that it is vital for students to take responsibility for their own learning and that is it my responsibility to create opportunities for them to be successful. It is also my responsibility to help them find ways to be successful during those times when they struggle. I believe true learning occurs when students take responsibility for the material. I cannot force knowledge into an uninterested and unwilling mind. My job is to help students see the need for the knowledge and motivate them to want to understand the information.

  • Facilitate positive working environments that encourage student centered collaborative learning.

o I believe that deep learning occurs in the collaborative learning environment because students take responsibility for the content and feel comfortable asking each other for help. This responsibility is owned not only on the individual level but also for the collective. Creating this atmosphere is a win-win for all of the students involved because students with deficits are brought up to speed and the students helping have a better understanding of the content by synthesizing the concepts at a level where there is mutual understanding.

  • Provide opportunities for students to be directly involved and responsible for patient care in which they are prepared though guidance and mentorship to have successful experiences. I maximize these opportunities by providing a framework that encourages students to be responsible for their learning through self-reflection, evaluation, planning, and action.

o I believe that in order for students to truly understand how to work effectively in the healthcare system, they must understand why we do what we do and also how we approach and respond to situations. On my experiential rotation, I accomplish this by coaching students to understand the conceptual framework in which we analyze and solve problems. I model those same behaviors with integrity so they can pull these concepts into the light of day and into practice. I create the opportunity to be put into the experience so that they can put all of the pieces together. I believe it is important for the student to self-reflect on the experience so that they can analyze their behaviors in the context of the framework. Then my responsibility is to put this all together with my perspective to help the student plan actions for improvement. It is not only my assessment but also the students' self-reflections that help them become effective learners because with this knowledge, they can make inferences to other problems.
