These FAQs may answer questions about your schedule before orientation. You’ll learn how to request schedule changes during your academic program overview, and we’ve also created an advising guide to help you prepare.
We recommend taking 14-16 credits each semester. Some majors require that students enroll in more credits their first semester. A minimum of 12 credits is required to be a full-time student.
PL or Discussions are an additional class activity that focuses on collaboration and group study to support student learning in more rigorous courses. You will learn during the class lecture whether attendance at PL/Discussions is required or optional. Regardless, we highly encourage you to take advantage of this resource!
Class, labs, studios, and other course meeting times vary. Pay attention to the class meeting start and end times listed for each course. Classes will be listed on your weekly schedule when they start, but the weekly layout may not block out the full class meeting time.
The first hour is dedicated to instructions, and the remaining time is the application of the instructions.
Language courses with 002 and 004 numbers are only offered in the spring semester, so you can look forward to taking your language course next term.
You and your instructor will determine a time which works for the two of you in the first weeks of the fall semester.
Choir auditions will take place at the beginning of the fall semester and will be added to your schedule at that time. If you wish to participate in the Drake University Community Chorus, you can request it be added to your schedule without an audition.
Yes, you can be placed into band without an audition.
Athletic practice times are scheduled as "classes" to block that time for you and avoid conflicts with classes.
On the rare occasion that two of your required courses slightly overlap, we have obtained pre-approval of the time conflict from your course instructors. Please plan to discuss how to accommodate the conflicts with your instructors during the first week of classes.
There will be a process for schedule change requests shared with you during your Academic Program Overview at Summer Orientation. This includes requesting band and/or Drake University Community Chorus, which do not require auditions.
You can view textbooks and course materials for any course by clicking on the blue "Textbooks and Course Materials" button at the bottom of the course description page. If you have opted in to Course Ready you will not need take additional steps to buy course materials, they will be ready for you at the Bulldog Shop at the start of each semester.
Course Ready is a program that provides students all required course textbooks and materials on or before the first day of class for a flat fee each semester. Students are automatically "enrolled" in this program. Visit the Bulldog Shop & Course Ready table at the Orientation Farewell Reception & Services Fair if you have additional questions or would like to opt out of this program.
