Clinical Mental Health Counseling Specialization

This specialization pairs the 33-credit-hour counseling core with 27 credit hours focused on clinical courses and electives to align your preparation with your career plans.

Earn Multiple Specializations

With a common set of courses across all three specializations, you can choose to complete an additional specialization in Rehabilitation or School Counseling to gain additional expertise and licensures.

Electives

Electives that allow students to customize their education and training include topics like EMDR, addiction, sexuality, positive psychology, counseling children and adolescents, and play therapy. These courses provide unique opportunities to explore new methodologies and intervention strategies to expand your career options.

Professional Experiences

You’ll prepare to thrive as a mental health counselor through extensive applied training, including a 100-hour practicum and 600 hours of supervised clinical practice in a setting aligned with your career goals. You’ll engage with professional organizations, articulate your counseling philosophy, and establish your professional identity to prepare for your service in schools. Our program will help you develop your professional counselor identity through topics rooted in reflection, theory, and advocacy.

EMDR Certification

Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing, or EMDR, has grown in popularity as research highlights its effectiveness. Students have the unique opportunity to complete the training requirements to become certified while in the program.

Fulfill Licensure Requirements in Iowa

Drake’s CACREP Clinical Mental Health Counseling program allows students to immediately apply for a temporary mental health counselor license upon graduation. Licensed Mental Health Counselors (LMHC) in Iowa are able to seek licensure and practice telehealth in more than 30 states.
