MS in Counseling, School Counseling

In Drake University’s Master of Science in Counseling program with a School Counseling specialization, you’ll develop the knowledge and skills to work with K–12 students, supporting their academic, personal, social, emotional, and career growth.

Program Options

Your pathway to becoming an impactful school counselor begins at Drake with training that can be tailored to your aspirations.

School Counseling Specialization, Licensed Teachers

If you’re already a licensed teacher in Iowa, you’ll add the School Counseling degree to your existing credential after completing your master’s degree. The program is 39 credit hours for K-12 Licensure.

School Counseling Specialization, Non-Licensed

If you aren’t a licensed teacher, you are required to take an additional course for licensure. Upon program completion, you’ll be eligible for the Initial Professional Service License, which can be converted into a Professional Service License after two years.

Earn Multiple Specializations

You can choose to complete an additional specialization in Clinical Mental Health and/or Rehabilitation Counseling to gain additional expertise and licensures.

Certification Options

Students can stay up to date on emerging methods with classes on Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Play Therapy, Positive Discipline: Parent Education, and Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CADC) education.

What challenges do students face, and what can you do as a counselor to introduce adaptive strategies? Experience real-world counseling opportunities to apply your classroom knowledge in an agency or school setting with practicum and internship opportunities at the conclusion of the program.

Professional Experiences

You’ll prepare for your role as a school counselor through a 100-hour practicum and 500 hours of supervised clinical practice in a setting aligned with your career goals. You’ll engage with professional organizations, articulate your counseling philosophy, and establish your professional identity to prepare you for your service in schools. Our program will help you develop your professional counselor identity through topics rooted in reflection, theory, and advocacy.

Qualify for a School Counseling License in Iowa

Whether you’re already a licensed teacher or are moving into school counseling from a background outside of education, you will be eligible to apply for an Initial Professional Service License in Iowa.
