You’ve spent your whole life consuming digital media. As a student in Drake’s School of Journalism and Mass Communication, you’ll get hands-on experience producing the stories that will captivate audiences.
B.A.J.M.C. in Digital Media Production
Blend future-focused technical skills and time-honored storytelling techniques while honing your craft on campus and in internships. More than half of digital media production majors pursue a second major, which lends even more perspective to your work.
Open JMC Major
Open JMC majors jump in on day one to explore classes in any of the specialized areas offered at Drake before determining their direction forward. All along, you’ll have access to the faculty, internship opportunities, and horizon-expanding liberal arts classes that allow you to customize your experience.
Meet the Faculty
Our Digital Media Production faculty teach from experience: They have worked on marketing campaigns for national clients, earned wide recognition for their film and production work, and conducted vital research that advances the field.
Outside the Classroom
You’ll find Digital Media Production graduates at leading publications or captivating audiences as filmmakers, producers, or multimedia storytellers. Yet, no matter their title or résumé, their careers started to gain traction at Drake—often through internships, cross-disciplinary projects, and on-campus media.
Campus Media
Write, shoot, and edit videos for campus publications, DJ on the campus radio station, or cover the annual Drake Relays for the Drake Broadcasting System—the nation’s oldest, largest student-run production.
University Communications
You don’t have to go far to get experience working at a full-service digital agency: Every year, Drake’s University Communications & Marketing office hires digital media majors to help share the Bulldog story with the world.
Work on a Film Set
The Drake Broadcasting System’s 48-Hour Film Festival gives students a chance to show off short films completed in just two days. Other students have taken their work even further, submitting entries for prestigious film fests around the globe.
Internships
Our internship coordinator will help you identify career-making opportunities in Des Moines and in other top markets. Drake students have secured assignments with leaders such as ESPN, People Inc. (formerly Dotdash Meredith Corp.), Iowa Public Radio, and Clear Channel Communications.
Student Organizations
Get your start at The Times-Delphic, Drake Political Review, or Drake Mag, award-winning, student-led publications that rely on writers, videographers, photographers, designers, and editors like you to create content that reflects the full Bulldog experience. Or produce your own show with the Drake Broadcasting System.
Awards
Bulldogs do work that stands out, winning dozens of national and local awards each year. In recent years, Drake students have garnered recognition from the student Emmys, Associated Collegiate Press Pacemaker awards, and Iowa Broadcast News Association.
