Great journalism happens in print, online, in podcasts, and on the radio and television. Drake’s Multimedia Journalism program equips you to communicate through all these formats with a curriculum that adapts to and incorporates the latest technologies available.
B.A.J.M.C. in Multimedia Journalism
Build job-ready skills through required courses in media editing, video production, web design or app development, statehouse reporting, and visual communication. After an all-encompassing, hands-on introduction, you’re advised to focus your electives toward a specialization in editing, advanced video reporting, documentary, studio production, sports producing, public affairs reporting, or advanced social media strategies.
Open JMC Major
Explore everything the School of Journalism and Mass Communication offers and then choose your path. Take your first two years to sample electives in advertising, public relations, sports media and communication, magazine and brand media, and digital media production.
Meet the Faculty
When it comes to the storytelling potential of written and visual media, the faculty in Drake’s School of Journalism and Mass Communication teach from experience, sharing the kind of lessons you only learn after years in the field.
Outside the Classroom
You’ll learn the nuts and bolts of journalism in the classroom before heading out into the world to conduct interviews, film events, and take photos. These experiences not only help you develop original narratives—they also shape your approach to the profession and stand out on a résumé.
Student Publications
Earn clip-worthy bylines at award-winning publications like The Times-Delphic and Drake Mag, where you’ll have a chance to cover every aspect of the Bulldog experience as a writer, editor, photographer, videographer, or designer.
Drake Broadcasting System
Host, report, or work behind the scenes at the Drake Broadcasting System, a student-run outlet that covers all things Bulldog through live television and radio broadcasts, podcasts, and other multimedia projects.
Production Jobs
Go behind the camera and into the production booth while delivering content for Drake Athletics and ESPN+, or participate in campus coverage of the Drake Relays—the nation’s oldest and largest student-run production.
DBS 48-Hour Film Festival
The Drake Broadcasting System’s 48-Hour Film Festival gives students a chance to show off short films completed in just two days. Students have taken their work even further, submitting entries for prestigious film fests.
Internships
Our internship coordinator can connect you with opportunities that will kick-start your career. In recent years, students have interned at places including The Des Moines Register, the Philadelphia Inquirer, and People Inc. (formerly Dotdash Meredith Corp.).
